Future Spartans!!! I’d first like to congratulate you all on being accepted to your Michigan State University study abroad and I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone. My name is Lydia Olson and I’ve been an ambassador with the American Semester Program for 5 terms. I graduated this May with a degree in Hospitality Business focused in restaurant management. This summer will be my last term with the program as I will be taking a gap year to explore Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
I hope you all are excited to join the stewards and ambassadors this summer because Michigan, in my unbiased opinion, is one of the best states to be in for the summer. With trips to Niagara Falls, Lake Michigan, the sand dunes, Chicago, and of course exploring the Lansing/East Lansing area, I know that each one of you will fall in love with this state that I call home. Some of my favorite things to do are to see local bands, go dancing, reading, and trying new restaurants.
Some tips for coming to Michigan
- While it is summer here, the weather is still a little unpredictable; bring a couple of pieces of warm clothing because we will get at least one cold snap here.
- Make sure to leave some room in your suitcase for souvenirs, clothing, and snacks you want to share when you get back home. I ended up spending an extra 100 dollars bringing back my souvenirs.
- Be open to everything. Traveling to a new country is stressful, but everyone is experiencing that same thing. The stewards and ambassadors have all travelled and are here to help you with anything you are going through.
Can’t wait to meet you in a few weeks. Go Green! Go White!
