Hey all! My name is Kaitlyn Bushbaker, and I will be one of the ambassadors helping out this summer. This is my 3rd and final year being an ambassador for the American Semester Program, as I will be traveling to the Netherlands in the fall to start my Master’s degree in global health. Four of my favorite things are outdoorsy activities (kayaking, sports, running, hiking, etc.), craft beer, dogs, and traveling. Like Kelsey said in her intro, Michigan is known for being big on craft beer breweries, and I’d be more than happy to share some of my favorites with you too!
I am beyond excited to help introduce you to my home state of Michigan and my beloved alma mater, Michigan State University. Michigan has a lot to offer, as well as the surrounding areas, as you will come to find out during the excursions that the stewards have planned. This will include going “up north” to Mackinaw Island, a classic county fair, Detroit, Chicago, Niagara Falls, and exploring the local area around the uni.
Michigan State University itself is an incredible institution. Students here are extremely passionate about their school. Soon, you will be a fellow Spartan and I’m sure you will feel the same way! This will include stocking up on some green and white gear, meeting our beloved mascot Sparty, and learning the appropriate response when someone yells “GO GREEN!” Some tips I have:
- Campus is beautiful, and also very big. Get ready to walk a lot and bring comfortable shoes! You can also rent or buy a cheap used bike during your time here if you prefer to do that.
- If you plan on visiting the bars around campus, the dress is pretty relaxed. Some people like to get dressed up, but it is also okay to wear jeans and a T-shirt (or anything in between really). So whatever you feel comfortable in.
Please feel free to reach out to me or any of the other ambassadors or stewards if you have any questions! I can’t wait to meet you all, and I look forward to getting to know everyone. Safe travels!
